Age: 40
Norteamericana. Madre. Turista. A mystery wrapped in an enigma, encased in several layers of fantasy, denial and inevitably, trauma. She is clearly wealthy — especially by Boca Grande standards — but her six-hundred-dollar handbag has a broken clasp. Her Irish linen skirt is unraveling at the hem. She is stylish, beautiful and confident, but appears to be somehow lost. She wanders through her hotel and the streets and restaurants of Boca Grande like a ghost, alone at first, but not for long. A woman like Charlotte Douglas is rarely alone for long. Where is she from? Why is she in Boca Grande? For what or whom is she searching? What exactly has she been through?

Charlotte Douglas
“She understood that something was always going on in the world but believed that it would turn out all right. She believed the world to be peopled with others like herself. She associated the word “revolution” with the Boston Tea Party, one of the few events in the history of the United States prior to the westward expansion to have come to her attention. She also associated it with events in France and Russia that had probably turned out all right, otherwise why had they happened. A not atypical norteamericana.”
